Academic Programs

Go To Top

The Ferndale Public Schools’ traditional curriculum is aligned with the Michigan Department of Education's Curriculum Framework. This ensures that Ferndale students receive instruction consistent with the state’s rigorous expectations for student performance, and ensures students will develop the knowledge and abilities needed to be successful.  The Ferndale Public Schools offer several alternative programs within the regular curriculum.

  • Extended School Year Program: The extended school year program is a highly praised model in the state. Research shows extra days in school and shorter vacations improve student achievement. The program operates on a 40 days on, five days off schedule with a shorter summer vacation. The program is structured with a multi-aged, non-graded class structure and half-day kindergarten with advanced technology integrated into daily work. This popular program is offered for students in grades K-6 at John F. Kennedy School, 24220 Rosewood, Oak Park
  • Open Classroom Program: The Open Classroom Program serves district students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program focuses on independent learning and strong parental involvement. Students benefit from flexible groupings based on interests and readiness. This popular program is offered for students in grades K-6 at John F. Kennedy School, 24220 Rosewood, Oak Park; for students in grades 5-6 at Coolidge Intermediate School, 2521 Bermuda, Ferndale, and for students in grades 7-8 at Ferndale Middle School 725 Pinecrest, Ferndale.
  • Arts Across the Curriculum: This program provides a connection between the required curriculum and the arts community. Using a collaborative method that incorporates units of study with visual arts, music and creative movement, teams of teachers provide the core academic subjects of language arts, math, science, and social studies. This program serves fifth and sixth graders at Coolidge Intermediate School, and seventh and eighth graders at Ferndale Middle School.
  • Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA): CASA is a cross-district consortium program that includes partnerships with several neighboring districts, in addition to the Ferndale Public Schools. High school students who participate in CASA study many unique classes not usually available in traditional schools, including dance, sculpture, Japanese, Russian, philosophy, or advanced placement statistics, world mythology, debate and forensics, global issues, and computer networking. CASA also offers eight Advanced Placement classes through which students can earn college credit. CASA is located at Jackson Center, 23561 Rosewood, Oak Park.

Facilities and Resources

Go To Top

All schools have up-to-date media centers, and technology and computer labs. The high school has a state-of-the-art science wing and shares a beautiful media center with the middle school. Ferndale Schools classrooms have lots of natural light, and comfortable, pleasing materials designed for students. The schools are grade-level facilities (with the exception of the magnet programs), and the buildings have equipment designed for the specific grade-level of students in the school, including age-appropriate playground equipment.

Ferndale Board of Education

The Ferndale Board of Education has demonstrated its commitment to quality education by developing the following Board goals designed to create the vision for the future:

  • To establish a five-year management planning process and five-year plan of management goals and objectives.
  • To establish a plan to incrementally improve student achievement, with the initial primary focus on MEAP testing.
  • To complete a comprehensive review of the district’s instructional delivery system.
  • To complete a comprehensive review of district finances, identifying possible sources of new revenue and creative ways to reduce expenditures in an effort to work toward a budget in which revenue exceeds expenditures, exclusive of fund equity.
  • To complete a comprehensive review of Board policies, with the intent of ensuring that all policies are consistent with state law and that all aspects of district operations are consistent with Board policy.
  • To establish a focus on "Customer Service" in an effort to let those we serve know we care about them and their needs. And to develop an improved program of communications needs in an effort to focus on the many positive aspects of our school district.

Seven elected members serve on the Board of Education for overlapping four-year terms. They serve without compensation except for reimbursement of expenses.

The Board meets at 7:00pm the third Monday of each month at the Harding Administration Center Media Center. Study sessions are scheduled when necessary. Board of Education meetings are open to the public and attendance is encouraged. Opportunity is provided for audience members to have public comment at the beginning of each meeting.

School Board elections are held annually for open seats on the first Monday of June. For election information, contact the Business Office at (248) 586-8667.
