Millennial Mayors Congress

Overview

The Millennial Mayors Congress is a partnership of experienced and emerging civic leaders who will work together to address regional challenges. It will convene for the first time in May 2009. Participating cities will be represented by their mayor (or their appointee) and a resident "Millennial," or young adult aged approximately 18-35.

All representatives will work together to develop an action agenda to a challenge of regional significance. After adopting the agenda by consensus decision, city representatives will take it back to their city council and administration for locally-customized implementation. Millennial representatives will work within the community to build awareness and energy for the new initiative.

Eligibility and Expectations

Millennial representatives will be appointed by the City Council. They will serve one-year terms beginning in May 2009 with the opportunity for reappointment. Millennial representatives are expected to attend an orientation at the start of their term, participate in bi-monthly meetings, engage their peer network and acquire knowledge as necessary about the issues under consideration. Representatives must be at least 18 years old and should not already hold elected public office in their community.

The Michigan Suburbs Alliance will begin accepting applications on behalf of the City on March 2, 2009. Applications are due by midnight on March 29, 2009. City Council will review applications and appoint a Millennial representative in April. Please contact Sharon Carney (248-546-2380 or sharon@suburbsalliance.org) if you have any questions.
