PROPOSED MINUTES
FERNDALE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2006, 7:30 P.M. AT CITY HALL
A Regular Meeting of the Ferndale City Council was held Monday,
January 23, 2006, at City Hall, 300 East Nine Mile Road, Ferndale.
Mayor Porter called the meeting to order at 7:46 p.m.
Mayor Porter led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Roll call showed the following members of Council present:
Council Members Covey, Galloway, Gumbleton, Lennon; Mayor Porter.
Absent: None.
PRESENTATION Introduction of New Firefighters
Jacob Latson
Joseph Helmick
XXX. Fire Chief Schmidt introduced two new Firefighters, being
Jacob Latson and Joseph Helmick to City Council and the community
at-large.
PRESENTATION Ferndale Recreation Department
XXX. Marsha Mellert, Ferndale Recreation Director, made a
presentation by updating Council and the public on activities of the
Recreation Department.
PRESENTATION Resolutions for Ferndale Firefighters and Ferndale
Police Officers regarding their efforts during Hurricane Katrina
XXX. Moved by Councilman Lennon, supported unanimously, to adopt
the Resolution for Ferndale Firefighters/Paramedics Patrick Sheehan
and Steven Light regarding their efforts during Hurricane Katrina.
ADOPTED UNANMIOUSLY
XXX. Moved by Councilman Lennon, supported unanimously, to adopt
the Resolution for Ferndale Police Officers Captain Timothy Collins,
Detective Brendan Moore, Officer Timothy Andre and Officer Dennis
Emmi regarding their efforts during Hurricane Katrina.

XXX. Call to Audience
1. Ann Heler, representing Citizens for a Fairer Ferndale,
requested Council to look into revising the WFRN Cable Policy
regarding cablecasting election forums.
2. Frank Flores, on behalf American Legion, requested that
Council place a sign commemorating the American Legion State
Champions of 1988 along with the other signs at the entrance to the
City.
3. Sharon Hinman expressed concern regarding dumpsters near Rite
Aid and a Notice of Violation issued to her by the CDS Department.
Consent Agenda
XXX. Moved by Councilman Galloway, seconded by Councilman Covey,
to approve the Consent Agenda, as submitted:
A. Approval of the bills and payrolls (as certified by City
Manager) to be paid subject to review by the Council Finance
Committee.

Regular Agenda
A. Appointment of Council Members to the Ferndale Community
Foundation
XXX. Moved by Councilman Lennon, seconded by Councilman Galloway,
to reappoint Councilman Covey and appoint Councilwoman Gumbleton as
Directors to the Ferndale Community Foundation for the Calendar Year
2006.

Call to Council
XXX. City Attorney Christ announced that the Michigan Court of
Appeals had decided favorably toward the City regarding a case
against Florence Cement.
XXX. Councilwoman Gumbleton commented on the Superintendent
Advisory Board Meeting she attended. She announced that there were
several different fundraisers for Ferndale Schools: Wednesday,
January 26, 2006, 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Ferndale High
School, the Art Boosters will have "Taste of Ferndale"; Friday,
February 3, 2006, the Ferndale Education Foundation will have their
annual fundraiser; and Thursday, February 18, 2006, will be the
Founder’s Day Dinner.
XXX. Councilman Lennon announced that reappointments and
appointments to the Boards and Commissions will be made Monday,
February 13, 2006, at the Regular Council Meeting. He announced that
former Police Lieutenant Clare "Mac" Macomber had passed away and
would submit a Resolution of Condolence for Council to adopt to
honor him.
XXX. Councilman Galloway announced that a breakfast would be held
for Realtors to highlight activities of the Ferndale School District
on Thursday, February 4, 2006, at 9:00 a.m. He also requested a
policy be developed for placement of signs that honor School Teams
and other extracurricular events from Schools and that it be placed
on the next Regular Meeting Agenda. Councilman Galloway requested
City Staff to research the use of parking and storing non-licensed
vehicles on public properties and right-of- ways.
XXX. Councilman Covey commented on the upcoming Blues Festival,
which is a Superbowl sanctioned event.
Mayor Porter adjourned the meeting at 8:49 p.m.
