The City’s Code Enforcement Officer is primarily responsible for enforcing codes related to property maintenance. Thousands of complaints are received each year ranging from tall weeds and abandoned vehicles to trash/debris and rodent harborage. Additionally, the Officer drives the City each week to check abandoned properties.

Code Enforcement Division hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday.
Phone: (248)546-2366 Fax: (248)546-4776

Code Enforcement Officer Joe Piro is available Monday-Thursday between 8:00am - 9:00am and 4:00pm - 5:00pm; otherwise they are in the field.

To report a code violation:

  • Call the Code Enforcement Hotline 24/7/365: (248)546-2365
  • Email

Remember to include details of the complaint and a complete street address (number and street). You do not have to leave your name; all code enforcement calls are confidential.

When a Code Enforcement Officer discovers a violation of a code, she will attempt to contact the property owner to explain the problem. A "door tag" may be left on the porch. If nothing is done a Notice of Violation is sent.

A Notice of Violation cites specific code violations and gives a Compliance Date. The Code Enforcement Officer will verify that the violation was corrected by that date. If not, a second Notice may be sent or the Officer can issue a ticket. NOTE: if you need a little extra time, call the Officer who issued the Notice at 248-546-2366 and explain your situation.

If the violation continues after the fine is paid on the first ticket, a second ticket is issued. If the fine on the second ticket is paid, a third ticket is issued if the violation still exists. Of course, tickets are issued if the fine isn’t paid as well. If you get a ticket, you can correct the violation up to 8am on the morning of your Court date. The third ticket requires your presence in Court. If you are having difficulties correcting the violation, you may be given more time.

It is always best to keep your property in compliance with the code. If you are having difficulties, there are programs available to help you with lawn mowing, snow removal, minor home repair and home improvements. Call (248)546-2366 for more information on these programs.
