State Activates Emerald Ash Borer Disposal
Sites
Four sites in southeastern Michigan offering no-cost disposal of
ash trees, materials by the Michigan Department of Agriculture
April 3, 2003- State and local officials today announced the
opening of four disposal sites located throughout southeastern
Michigan to help communities and homeowners impacted by emerald ash
borer (EAB) infestations causing dead and dying ash trees and to
ensure proper disposal of these materials.
The borer, an exotic insect from Asia detected last summer in
Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties,
has already killed or damaged millions of ash trees in this
six-county area. To control and prevent its further spread, the
Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) issued a quarantine on all
ash trees and products in the affected counties. Under this
quarantine, it is illegal to move ash trees, branches, lumber,
firewood and wood chips larger than one-inch in diameter outside
these six counties.
These disposal sites will be instrumental in providing a
much-needed resource and relief for Southeast Michigan communities
and residents affected by EAB’s devastating impacts," said
MDA Director Dan Wyant. "Additionally, they will assist the
state in ensuring that all ash trees and materials in the six
quarantined counties are disposed of properly and safely, which is
key to preventing the insect from spreading to other areas."

chips, etc.) free of charge from municipalities, home and property
owners and private contractors. They will be operational during
posted times through spring and as determined necessary and/or
appropriate.
Companies or individuals must be able to deliver the materials to
the yard and offload it. Basic information about the origin and
details regarding the ash trees/materials will be requested to
assist the state in tracking and evaluating future disposal
operations. Materials will be chipped to one-inch and transported to
a cogeneration plant, where they will be used to produce
electricity. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/mda
and use the key word "ash borer."
To report any signs of dying ash trees outside the six-county
quarantined area, call the state’s toll-free Emerald Ash Borer
Hotline at (866) 325-0023. For assistance with identification,
