Attention all gardeners, obtain low-cost soil testing at local hardware stores through an offer supported by Oakland County MSU Extension and SOCRRA,  Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority.  This test is only $12 per sample.

A soil test shows the levels of nutrients in your garden or lawn - a first step in determining how much and what type of fertilizer is needed. The test also shows the level of organic matter in the soil - an essential component for healthy soil which gradually releases nutrients to soil roots and helps prevent soil-borne diseases. Soil nutrient testing is the first step toward a chemical-free, healthy lawn and garden. Proper use of slow-release fertilizers is a step which helps protect groundwater quality and local lakes and streams.

For $12 per sample, MSU will test the soil and mail you the results for pH level, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, lime requirement, and organic matter. Participating stores accept samples from homeowners March 25 through April 9.  Sampling instructions are available through participating these stores and SOCRRA.: Hilzinger Ace Hardware and the Garden Store (in Royal Oak); Uncle Luke's Feed Store (Troy); Four Seasons Garden Center (Oak Park); all Damman Hardware stores, and all English Garden stores, among others. For a complete list of participating retailers, call SOCRRA weekdays at (248) 288-5150.
