Pumping Station

Water/Sewer Overview   |  Pumping Station
Consumers Annual Report  |  Water Meter Replacement Program

The City of Ferndale's water distribution system includes a pumping/storage complex.  This facility located at 1128 Hilton Road (between Hilton and GTRR) consists of a 3,000,000 gallon storage tank and a pump building.  The pump building has three pumps, all centrifugal.  Usage, horsepower, and gallons @ minute of these pumps are documented in the following chart:

Pump Number Application HP GPM
1 Pressure Booster (In-Line) 250 6500
2 Pressure Booster (In-Line) 200 8500
3 Volume Booster (From Tank) 300 7000

The present method of utilization is as follows.  The tank is disinfected and filled in the spring of the year.  Pumping "season" (when usage of water increases due to temperature changes) generally begins in late May and lasts until the beginning of October (this is also dependent on climatic conditions).  After the season ends the tank is drained.

Chuck Simon from DPW is seen here at the pumping stationThe operation of the pumps is dependent on line pressure and gallons.  We strive to maintain a pressure of 55 PSI at all times at the station.  This will change throughout the distribution system due to elevation and friction coefficients within the water mains (these change with age and condition).

As an example, northwest Ferndale is thirty  feet higher than the pump station.  If the pressure drips and volume changes slightly, then pumps #1 and #2 are utilized.  If both parameters change, then additional volume is introduced by pump #3 (from the storage tank).  All the pumps can be utilized in various combinations to achieve our goal.

The Restoration of the Water Tank

Ferndale’s Water tank was restored and repainted during June, 1999.  The exterior had three coats of paint and the interior will have four coats.
