Child
Passenger Safety Seats

A Public Service Announcement From Firefighter/Paramedic
McMenamin Child Passenger Safety Technician– Ferndale Fire
Department
On July 1, 2008, the State of Michigan enacted a law requiring
the use of child booster seats for all children who are between the
ages of 4 to 8 and less than 4'9" in height. This law will help
decrease the injury and fatality rates of children riding in motor
vehicles. This law has been enacted in many states throughout the
country with positive results.
The majority of requests that we receive are for newborn
passenger safety. We would like to inform all of the citizens that
we serve that we provide child car safety instruction for children
of all ages.
I urge everyone to use child booster seats as a method of
securing their children who are between the ages of 4 to 8 and under
4'9" in height. As a reminder, a child is far safer riding in an
approved child safety seat than not in one. Additionally, all adults
and children who are older than 8 and taller than 4'9" should be
wearing a seat belt which is also a State of Michigan law.
If anyone in the community has any questions, or wishes to
receive more information on booster seats, please contact our
department at (248) 546-2510.
