Typist II

General Statement of Duties:
To perform the more difficult and complex clerical work requiring
considerable typing skills as an essential part of the job; to
perform the routine policewomen duties in the Police department; and
to perform the related work as required.
Supervision Received:
Work under the supervision of an administrative or clerical
employee of higher grade.
Supervision Exercised:
Supervision may be exercised over a small group of clerical
employees engaged in record keeping and routine office work.
Typical Examples of Work:
An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of
the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which
an employee may be expected to perform.)
- Type from rough drafts or instructions, forms, letters,
payrolls, receipts, records, vouchers, departmental reports,
permits or similar materials frequently requiring independent
action and secretions on routine difficulties encountered.
- Cut stencils, compos routine letters, prepare rough drafts
report narratives and
- tabulations.
- Maintain records, files, charts and similar information for
a small or moderate sized office.
- Make more complex postings, reconcilements and balances of
clerical records which may require some knowledge of
bookkeeping.
- Give information to the public by telephone or in person
where familiarity with moderately complex requirements of
procedures is essential; explain procedures and activities to
the public.
- Collect fees and receive payments, and assist the public in
the preparation of forms and statements.
- Make difficult arithmetic computations and check
computations made by other clerical personnel.
- Assist in the preparation of payrolls by assembling and
computing data from records.
- Check the accuracy and completeness of records, forms,
documents and attachments according to detailed procedures or by
comparison with original sources.
- Perform miscellaneous clerical work as required, such as the
receipt and distribution of mail, the requisitioning of supplies
and the operation of various office machines.
- May perform routine duties in the Police Department such as
finger printing and receipt of traffic violation fines.
- May interrogate and search female prisoners.
- Perform related work as required.
Desirable Qualifications for Employment:
- Reasonable knowledge of office practices and procedures and
of business English and commercial arithmetic.
- Ability to type form plain copy at the rate of fifty (50)
words per minute.
- Ability to write legibly.
- Ability to maintain and keep involved clerical records and
prepare accurate reports and tabulations from such records.
- Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions.
- Ability to deal effectively with people in the interview
situation.
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working
relationships with the public and other employees.
An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the
equivalent of the following training and experience:
- Graduation from an accredited high school including or
supplemented by courses in typing.
- One year’s experience in general office work, part of which
involves typing.
